I. Oct. 2012: My ailing & medicated father, JAMES C. BAREFIELD, an elderly widower & former business-owner who received Social Security, VA benefits, Hospice & Medicare, was coerced by his estranged younger brother (Russell W. Barefield) into leaving his West Monroe home of more than 40 years, buying a $10,354 portable building (*see personal check #3109 dated 10/09/2012) he then paid to have converted into a house, & move into it in rural, isolated Baskin on his brother’s “land”, an hour away from his family & friends. He had no phone line in this new building nor a cell phone, but Russell had full use of my dad’s 2010 Dodge truck & took control of his bank account.
II. Oct. 05, 2012: $10K cash was withdrawn from my dad’s account. (*See receipt).
III. 2 Chase cashier’s checks, originally dated 02/22/2010 in the amount of $25K each, which had only my dad’s name (James Barefield) & my name listed as the remitter were surreptitiously deposited & disappeared while he lived next to his brother, Russell Barefield.
Check # 9236101025 on 11/09/2012, the 2nd month he lived in Baskin.
Check # 9236101026 on 12/12/2013. (Medical records show Dad was both terminally ill with cancer & heavily medicated with the narcotic Oxycodone during this time. He died 3 months later.)
IV. Jan. 2014: Six weeks before my dad died, his life insurance policy was secretly changed (without a notary or witness signature or the insurance agent’s knowledge), omitting me & his grandchildren & naming only his younger brother as 100% beneficiary of a $25K policy. (*See letter from company).
V. Mar. 2014: Dad died intestate & debt-free. He had been a successful business-owner with substantial savings who pre-paid for his modest funeral arraignments yet died with less than $3K in his account.
A legal debate ensued over the missing funds, threats received when the whereabouts of the money was questioned, & Russell’s refusal to relinquish his false claim to my dad’s fully furnished home/portable building. (*See FB “threat” in 2014 & photo post of harasser’s new SUV bought 1 month after dad’s death.)
As of Jan. 2016, Russell W. Barefield has renounced his claim to the building, but of the $75K+ he took from my father as he lay dying, Russell has only returned to me & my children $15K. (*See 3 cashier’s checks of $5K each as proof of his guilt.) We have yet to receive an apology.
